Dr. Joshua Sinai

Dr. Joshua Sinai is Professor of Practice, Intelligence & Global Security Studies, Capitol Technology University, Laurel, MD.

 

Dr. Sinai has more than 35-years’ experience as a practitioner-analyst in national and international security work in Washington, DC, where he has combined work in academia, government service (mostly as a contractor), and consulting in the corporate sector.

 

Areas of specialization cover the application of enterprise security risk management frameworks to a spectrum of risks in national and international security fields.

  • With risk defined as a function of threats, vulnerabilities, and consequences, and overall risk reduced by the application of prioritized risk mitigation measures, his fields of risk mitigation range from pandemics, economic crises, climate change, cyber-attacks, to terrorism and active shooters.

  • Among his consulting work in the private sector, from 2019 to 2021, Dr. Sinai consulted for several of TorchStone Global’s corporate clients. These included writing a report for a prominent healthcare provider on security systems to safeguard their remote nursing workers. At the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was detailed to support a major corporation whose emergency operations center required weekly updates on news trends that affected their operations, such as the introduction of new vaccines, new compliance and regulatory guidelines on vaccinating staff, viral infection rates in the U.S. and globally, and lockdown and border crossing restrictions and re-openings.

  • At Capitol Technology University, which Dr. Sinai joined in mid-2020, he administers the curriculum development and teaching of undergraduate B.S. and graduate M.S. and Ph.D degree programs on 1) Counterterrorism, and 2) Intelligence & Global Security. Both degree programs are accredited by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC).

  • Publishes extensively on national and international security subjects in academic and professional trade journals, as well as edited volumes.

    • Several articles in ASIS International’s “Security Management” magazine.

    • Pocket handbook on Active Shooter Prevention (May 2016, 2nd edition) is ASIS International’s top best-selling book.

    • Article on the 10 components of resilience for organizations and corporations to recover from a COVID-19-type pandemic was published in Homeland Security Today (April 2020).

  • Serves as the Associate Editor, Book Reviews, for the online academic journal Perspectives on Terrorism, which is published by the ICCT – The Hague.

  • Received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science (Comparative Politics) from Columbia University, in New York City.
